I've put together some quotes related to character values. Hope you find some of them meaningful. You may want to consider using a couple of them in your writing as reflection in flashback or closing of your writing, or as a trigger or foreshadow. BUT, do remember, use quotes and so on ONLY if it's appropriate ;)

As discussed in class, here are some quotes, proverbs and idioms you might find appropriate to include in your writing :)

Quote:
Life is about choices. Some we regret, some we are proud of. Some, however, will haunt us forever. 

Proverb: An idle brain is the devil's workshop
meaning: People who have nothing worthwhile to think about will usually think of something bad to do. 

Example : With only Jane and I at home, we had the perfect idle brains for the devil’s workshop! Before long, Jane came up with a really naughty plan.

Idiom: caught between the devil and the deep blue sea 
meaning – to be in a dilemma; to make a difficult choice.
Example: He was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Should he confess he had stolen the money or be beaten up by the gangster for not handing in the protection money?

Idiom: caught between the shoulder angel and devil
A shoulder angel represents conscience and is often accompanied by a shoulder devil representing temptation. They are used as imagery to depict the inner conflict of a character.
Example : 
• My shoulder angel urged me to return the bag of gold coins. However, my shoulder devil pointed out that nobody would find out even if I kept the money all to myself! 
• I was caught between my shoulder angel and the devil. Should I return the wallet or keep it for myself. Nobody would find out anyway.

 Idiom: devil of a time
meaning - a very difficult time
Example :
• This cold has been giving me a devil of a time. 
• Fixing the car seemed easy, but I had a devil of a time doing it. 

HONESTY
• Honesty is the best policy.
• An honest man is the noblest work of God.   
• A half truth is a whole lie. 
• If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. 
• A clean conscience is a soft pillow. 
• Honesty is better than ill-gotten wealth.

Example: Sally was glad to have owned up to her mistake. She realised that a clean conscience is indeed a soft pillow.

(About trouble)
Idiom: jump out of the frying pan and into the fire
meaning- to leave one dangerous or bad situation for a situation that is worse
Example : My friend jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. He changed jobs and had more problems in his new job than in his old one. 

Idiom: a leopard can't change his spots
meaning- you cannot change someone's basic human nature
Example : He promised his parents that he would kick his gambling habits. But alas, a leopard couldn’t change his spots. He was soon running up a mountain of gambling debts again.

Idiom: no use crying over spilled/spilt milk
Example : David’s sister pointed out that there was no use crying over spilled milk. Instead, he should learn not to procrastinate and start preparing for his next competition.

Idiom: the pot calls the kettle black
meaning- someone criticizes somebody for a fault that they have themselves
Example : My friend always criticizes me for being late but iy is really the pot calling the kettle black. He is often booked for late-coming too!

Idiom: pride comes before a fall
meaning- If you are proud, you may soon meet a difficulty that will make you humble.
Example : Kelvin boasted that he would once again be the top pupil of the class. However, pride comes before a fall when it was announced that the top position went to the quiet and studious Fred.

Idiom: tell the truth and shame the devil
meaning- it is better to tell the truth even though there may be consequences
Example : She knew that the boys had stolen the laptop. After a few sleepless night, she decided to inform the principal about it. It was better to tell the truth and shame the devil than to remain silent. 

Idiom: when the cat's away the mice will play
meaning- when someone who is in charge of children or students or workers is away then they will enjoy themselves and stop working
Example : The teacher returned to the classroom and everybody was running around. It was a perfect example that when the cat's away, the mice will play. 

Idiom: judge a book by its cover
meaning- to make decisions or draw conclusion about someone by how he looks on the outside
Example : Looking at his drab appearance, nobody knew that he was actually very rich. How true it is that we can't judge a book by its cover. 

National Day Drumming Performance

Bravo, boys and girls, you have done yourself ... and teachers ( Miss Wen, Mrs Tan & me! me!) PROUD . Given the little time you had to rehearse on stage, everything went smoothly- all of you took up position correctly, adapted quickly when you observed the need to, and most importantly, gave the audience a rousing performance that had many among them drumming imagery drums and shaking their bodies to the rhythm.

And we MUST NOT forget the group of you who came early and helped carried all the musical instruments onto the stage- you said you would do it, and you did :) I'm REALLY PROUD of you for the sense of responsibility in you and the demonstration of teamwork and loyalty to the class. YEAH! Good job!

Brunei Trip

 FINALLY, the hiccups of updating the blog are cleared >.<

I believe the Brunei trip is an eye-opener for many of the pupils. It was a first time for a number of pupils to fly in a plane, to leave the country and for many, a first time experience to taste grubs ;)

Having a go at wrapping glutinous rice. The more interesting part for our pupils was eating the fruit of their labour.

One of the greatest highlight of the whole trip - visiting the sago factory.
Watching how grubs in sago trees are harvested and having a factory worker demonstrating the eating of a live grub.

The look of disbelief and awe on our pupils' faces!

We must have hurt the feelings of the grubs when we squirmed at the sight of them ;)
Such juicy, fat, energetic wriggling grubs.

Answer Key for Science CA2 Practice Papers (remaining questions)

Greenwave - Tree Planting Day

Dear 5A

On 12 July 2016, Endeavour Primary participated in the Green Wave by planting a Kedongdong tree in school. One can see the tree in our school near the Art room.

Our VP, Mr Razali was there to grace the ceremony. Class 5A has the honour to witness the tree planting ceremony and some pupils have the opportunity to plant it with the VP.

What a day!

            What an exciting day it was- Sports Day! I did not imagine myself to be so caught up by the excitement of it. But, 5A, you should give yourselves a pat on the shoulder. Good job,everyone, for the wonderful demonstration of team spirit!
            I'm most proud that you have worked together on your own initiative to come up with posters, shakers, pom-pom and even found time to practise the cheers! Clap, clap, clap :))
            When some of you came back looking slightly dejected at not winning your event, my heart went out to you. How sweet of you to want to do the class proud. Well, you did! By representing the class in each event, ALL of YOU are winners because no one gave up!
           That said, the day was made sweeter by the fact that we are the LEVEL CHAMPION! Hurray!
           Credit must go to Mr Fawwaz for training you all and strategically putting you in the various events! 
           It was definitely heartening to witness the camaraderie among you, the encouragement when your team mates felt low in spirit, and the generous and sincere appreciation of team mates who won the races!
           2016 Sports Day was certainly a memorable one for us all :))

More of Little India Learning Journey

For our LJ to Little India, we are a privileged class to have two parent volunteers who not only accompanied us to ensure your safety but also took it upon themselves to be cameraman and co-teachers :)

Learning Journey to Little India

Before we knew it, Term 2 is already here! And by the third day I returned from my course, I was out of school again on a learning journey. How cool is that!

It was great opportunity for me to bond with you all, 5A. As promised, here are some pictures of our trip to Little India to share with Sarah, Jie Xin and Amelia who missed this learning journey as they were representing our school in the table tennis competition. Of course, for those of us who had gone on the trip, I hope these photos captured your moments of learning experience.
